My name is Genie Hambrick, and I moved to Homer, Alaska, on June 3, 2012. This is an account of why and how I got here, and what it’s like to be a newcomer, a cheechako, in a small town in our country’s Last Frontier.
For most of my writing life, I’ve been crafting words for someone else’s agenda. And for the most part, I’ve done a pretty good job. I’ve never wrecked an organization’s reputation or budget. In fact, I think I pretty much always helped in those areas. But occasionally I provided the easy pickin’s of a typographical error to give some people something to fuss about while their decisions and actions, or lack thereof, affected people’s lives and jobs.
How perfect then that I launched this blog with a typographical error in its URL. You’ve found me now, I hope, at CheechakoDiaries.com. Not CheechakoDairies.com. I’m not sure there are dairy farms in Alaska.
Genie, I’m so happy to see you here. (I typed “hear” the first time.) You are inspiring me a I also revive The Newlyfeds. Your writing is beautiful. I miss you.
“AS I revive The Newlyfeds.” Oh typo joy!
Genie, I’m trying to search my tired memory. Big Papa Rowe is also my Great Grandfather. My grandmother was Anna Lou Rowe (Jeff Rowe’s wife) My mother was Mary Lynn Rowe. I remember Uncle Hugh and Aunt Lelia well. Hello Cousin! Stay warm. I particularly liked your first essay about the terms of endearment for seniors. Great stuff.
